Thank you for your interest in writing for us at Edible Sea to Sky!

We are a member of Edible Communities, an award-winning series of community-based food publications whose mission is to transform the way communities shop for, cook, eat, and relate to the food that is grown and produced in their area.
Each issue emphasizes the current season in the Sea to Sky Corridor. We aim to cover all parts of the region and each aspect of the Edible Communities mission in every issue.

What We Want

We want stories about people doing amazing, unique, and creative work in the food industry. We rely on freelance writers to send us the untold stories of traditions being saved, latest innovations, under-the-radar talents, and important advocates in the region.
Article length varies depending upon topic but usually ranges between 700 – 1800 words. When appropriate to the story, we publish original and carefully tested recipes along with stories. If recipes are not original, they must be submitted with written permission to reprint. Some of the formats we consider:

  • Profiles of a farm, farmer, chef, restaurant, food industry advocate, rancher, or other person relating to the local food movement.
  • Deep dives on a specific local ingredients
  • Essays on experiences or ideas involving local food
  • Recipe or pair/bundle of recipes along a theme with a short introduction tying them together and to the season/region.

Payment and Schedule

We negotiate payment terms on an individual basis and pay on publication, starting around $0.35 CAD per word. Our standard contract covers first-time rights to publication, with exclusivity for six months and ongoing rights to reproduce all or partial versions of commissioned work, including on ediblecommunities.com and its other outlets and materials.

We plan each issue several months in advance, so aim to pitch at least 6 months before publication. We assign by the issue, and only publish four times a year (March, June, September and November), so please be patient while waiting for a response on pitches. Writer deadlines are usually about three months out from printing.

What to include in a pitch?

Consider your pitch a sample of your writing, as well a summary of the piece you are proposing. Show off your skills as you tell us the thesis of your article and not just why you want to write it, but why our readers will want to read it.
Please make sure to include the following in your pitch:

  • Which issue or season you propose it for
  • What it will be about
  • Why this matters to our readers
  • Proposed word count
  • Proposed sources
  • Location within the Sea to Sky Corridor
  • If you plan to include a recipe (and if so, at least an idea of what it will be)
  • Do you or the source have access to hi-res photos or can you/they get them?

Complete pitches should be emailed to: Editorial@EdibleSeatoSky.com
