“I feel like sometimes people don’t realize that they already have a lot of healthy and great treats in their kitchen,” says Tina Smishny of WOW treats. On her list: plain yogurt, goat kefir, coconut oil, hemp hearts, natural peanut butter (without the “nasty stuff,” as Smishny says) and most fruits and vegetables (avoid grapes and raisins; alliums, including onions, chives and garlic; avocados; rhubarb; and green tomatoes). Try slathering peanut butter on an apple slice. Or top your dog’s regular food with hemp hearts (rich in omega fats) and goat kefir or milk, which are all “great for you and great for your pet,” says Smishny.
These apple crisps are a simple, single-ingredient treat that celebrates the early-fall harvest; naturally sweet, full of fibre and super-easy to make — and as enjoyable for people as they are for dogs (see page TK for Chiwis’ ready-made options). “We like to use apples from our neighbours at Blackwater Creek Orchard in Devine,” says Smishny. “It’s a small organic farm known for its flavourful, carefully grown apples.”
Makes about 20 crisps
- 1 or 2 fresh apples (any variety)
Wash and core the apples, removing all seeds and stems. Slice into even rounds, about ⅛ inch thick. Arrange in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
Bake using one of the following methods (bake less for a chewier texture and longer for crispier):
- Low and slow method: Bake at the lowest setting on your oven (approximately 170°F) for 4 to 6 hours, flipping once halfway through when edges curl up.
- Faster method: Bake at 200°F for 2 to 3 hours, flipping halfway through. Watch closely near the end to avoid over-drying.
Let cool completely before serving. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.
